No Sound in Java on Ubuntu

Sound doesn’t work so well with Java apps in Ubuntu. To play sound, you should install the OpenJDK JRE, which can co-exist with Sun Java.

sudo apt-get install openjdk-6-jdk

Digital Photo Frames Meet Social Networking

It had to happen some time, I suppose. Digital photo frames, which up until now have just been limited to displaying photos from your USB flash drive, have not only Wi-Fi, but are also doing something with that Wi-Fi.

The new generation of digital photo frames are social networking-enabled. They’ll download and display photos from Facebook, Flickr, and so on.

HP DreamScreen 100

Hewlett-Packard is selling the DreamScreen 100, which has a 10 inch screen, for $200 (after rebate).

Google Adds Favicons to Google Webmaster Tools

When I logged in to Google Webmaster Tools today, I noticed the initial screen looked a little different. Here’s what the list of sites looks like:

What’s different is that in the site list, Webmaster Tools is now also showing the the little icon that appears in browser tabs. It’s called a “favicon” after the “favicon.ico” file in which it resides.

Once you click on a site for more info on that site, the favicon also shows in the site selector dropdown:

Although this doesn’t really add any functionality, it just makes Webmaster Tools a little more aesthetically pleasing. But if you have a large number of sites, it could be easier to scan the list of your sites.

VLC Puts on a Santa Hat for Christmas

I noticed today that VLC’s icon has a Santa hat. That was surprising, since I haven’t updated the current version of VLC since I installed it.

Actually, I think it’s an Easter egg, as people are discovering on Randy Jensen’s blog, Gear Diary, and Help for Linux. It’s happening on Windows, too, according to the NeoWin forum.

Interestingly, on Ubuntu, the icon:

appears in the Alt-Tab icon list
appears in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen
doesn’t appear in the top panel
doesn’t appear in the window menu for VLC player. (This last one is just because Ubuntu’s Gnome theme doesn’t put the program icons in the window menu corner).
