You can also try out GeoGebra without installing it via WebStart. You should have Java installed and enabled.

I looked around and found two for this e-commerce application comparison: PrestaShop and Drupal Commerce.

Actually, there’s another good one: UberCart, which is an e-commerce module for Drupal 6. But since Drupal Commerce is the evolution of UberCart, it seems there’s no reason to go with Drupal 6 and UberCart if you’re starting a new site. You might as well pair Drupal 7 with Drupal Commerce.

PrestaShop

PrestaShop is an open-source e-commerce application based on PHP.

Plus points for PrestaShop:

• More popular than Drupal Commerce (1472 Alexa rank vs. 76968 for Drupal Commerce)
• 90,000 shops use it
• 256,000 community members
• Seems easier to use and get going
• 256 major features

Possible cons for PrestaShop:

• Runs on MySQL only. Drupal and Drupal Commerce also support PostgreSQL
• Based out of France. I don’t think that should be too much of a problem, though. European payment methods are supported, but then so art the major American ones (Authorize.net and PayPal)

Drupal Commerce

Drupal Commerce is implemented as a series of modules for Drupal. There’s also an installation profile to allow you to easily install it along with the Drupal base.

Pros for Drupal Commerce:

• Based on Drupal. You get hundreds of Drupal modules that you can integrate to get great general content management and website functionality.
• While the PrestaShop site is more popular than Drupal Commerce’s, Drupal is much more popular at Alexa rank 396 than PrestaShop. You won’t be alone while using Drupal.
• Drupal Commerce is based on Drupal 7, a highly modular and modern CMS base. I know this seems repetitive, but 7 is a big plus for Drupal Commerce because of the flexibility it offers.

Negatives for Drupal Commerce:

• I think Drupal Commerce has less commerce-related modules (such as for payment) than PrestaShop. Many of those are still under development.

Summary

All in all, I think Drupal Commerce has the potential to be a great e-commerce environment combined with the general content management power of Drupal. If you’re looking for something easy and specifically already oriented toward e-commerce, PrestaShop might be better.

Unfortunately, you can only usually have one version of IE installed on your computer.

Now Micrsoft has come out with a way preview web pages with multiple versions of IE.

SuperPreview lets you view a web page in both IE6 and IE7 or 8, whichever you have installed on your machine.

For one, I use something called Zim. It’s a desktop wiki program.

A wiki is a user-editable, interlinked set of information, like Wikipedia, or the Portland Pattern Repository, the first and original wiki.

While there are a bunch of free wiki packages, they mostly require a webserver. Zim, by contrast, runs on your computer like a normal program.

The reason it’s handier than web-based wikis is:

• You don’t have to install a bunch of stuff
• Your files are immediately available to you (it doesn’t require a database)
• You don’t have to press “Edit” to start writing. You just click whereever you want and start typing.
• To make a new page, you just right click an existing page and select “New Sub Page”

Here’s just a few of the features:

• As stated above, to take notes, you just start typing. When you have enough that it needs to be more organized, just press Ctrl + a number from 1 to 5 to make the current line into a heading from level 1 to 5.
• You can make text bold, italic, underlined, and preformatted, as well.
• Once you have more text than comfortably fits on a page, just create a new page (Ctrl+N). You can drag and drop your pages to form a hierarchy.
• An clickable index of pages is displayed on the left side of the Zim window. All of the notes you see at one time make up a “notebook“. You can create multiple notebooks.
• You can search your notebooks, and there’s a task list feature as well (a subject for a future blog post).
• Zim saves your notes in plain wiki markup format. You can take the content of your notes files and paste them into a web-based wiki, depending upon the syntax your wiki uses. DokuWiki, for one, is mostly compatible with Zim.

Zim is a work in progress, so keep backups and don’t have your own source of information be your Zim notes. That said, Zim’s a really handy method of organization a lot of information.

Installing Zim

Install Zim on Ubuntu/Linux

Zim is available in the Ubuntu software repositories (make sure they’re all enabled). You can install Zim from the Software Center or click here from Firefox to install it. Otherwise enter the following from a terminal:

sudo apt-get install zim

Install Zim on Windows

A version of Zim for Windows is available here.

The automated installer is at version 0.28. A more current version (0.42) is avaible, but you have to install requirements yourself.

Install Zim on Apple Mac OS/X

First, install Darwin Ports for OS/X.

Then type this in a Terminal to install Zim:

%  cd /opt/local/bin/portslocation/dports/zim
%  sudo port install zim

Currently it’s at version 0.28.

No long-winded strategy, no enemy aliens, no unwieldy artillery targeting. Just shooting marbles mindlessly.

Playing Frozen Bubble

After you open up Frozen Bubble

Click on “Start 1P Game” (one player game), you’re presented with this:

You basically have a bunch of marbles (“frozen bubbles”) stuck like icicles at the top of the playing area. Your job is to get them to fall down.

You do that by aiming the shot marble you’re given at the bottom of the display upwards. Marbles of a given color dislodge all continuously touching marbles of that same color. So aim red for red, green for green. The marble beneath your shot marble tells you the color of the next one (for planning purposes).

Left and right arrow keys move the aimer, and up arrow key launches the marble.

Two player game

You can also play a two player game (choose “Start 2P Game” from the main menu):

In this case, there are two sets of key combinations:

For one player, left and right arrow keys move the aimer, and up arrow key launches the marble.

For the other player, X and V arrow keys move the aimer left and right, and the C key launches the marble. Sounds kind of strange, but it’s handy because the XCV keys are all in a row on normal keyboards.

Network play

Version 2 of Frozen Bubble supports playing over networks (both the Internet and local area networks). However, version 2 is not available on Windows at this time.

Frozen Bubble on Ubuntu/Linux

Frozen Bubble originated on Linux, and that’s where the latest version is currently available.

In Ubuntu and Debian, click here in Firefox to install. Or type this in a terminal:

sudo apt-get install frozen-bubble

Frozen Bubble on Windows

There are two ports of Frozen Bubble to Windows. Frozen Bubble Enhanced is the one you want to get. This is a direct link to the installer for Windows.

Frozen Bubble on Mac

Frozen Bubble is available on the Macintosh through Darwin Ports.

If Darwin Ports is already installed, type the following into a Terminal:

cd /opt/local/bin/portslocation/dports/frozenbubble2
sudo port install frozenbubble2

Frozen Bubble on Mobile Phones

You can even get Frozen Bubble on your cell phone. Check here for Android, iPhone, Java, and Symbian S60 (Nokia) versions.

Granted, there’s a “Recent Documents” part of the File menu that shows the most recently opened files, but it’s limited to five files. And usually you have different files for different projects.

There’s a plugin for gEdit which save which files you’re working on in a session. The Session Saver plugin is part of the gedit-plugins package for Ubuntu. You can install it with the Synaptic, the Package Manager, or type the following in the terminal:

sudo apt-get install gedit-plugins

Be sure the “universe” repository is enabled, because that’s where gedit-plugins lives.

Note: plugins aren’t currently as easy to make work in Windows yet.

Here’s a run-through of how the Session Saver plugin works.

After the plugin is installed, you need to activate it. Choose Preferences from the Edit menu:

In the Preferences window, choose the Plugins tab. Then select the checkbox next to “Session Saver” to activate it, and click Close:

One the plugin is active, a “Saved sessions” option gets added to the File menu. To save a session, open the files you want to work with for a given project, arrange the tabs, and choose “Save current session”:

Gedit pops up a dialog asking for the name of the session. The plugin doesn’t currently support renaming, so choose wisely:

When you save a session, the saved sessions are added as the first thing on the sessions menu. Just select one to open up that session:

gEdit starts opening all the files for that session:

If you select a session while there are open files in the gedit window, the new session will be opened in a new gedit window. If there’s just a blank, new file in a the Gedit window, the session will be opened in the same window.

Note: Normally Gedit opens files in new tabs. To create a new window, you can drag a tab out of Gedit, or choose “Move to New Window” in the Documents menu.

If, when you open a session, one of the files in the session were already open in another gedit window, gedit will ask you if you want to also edit the file in the new window, or open it as read-only. Select “Don’t Edit” to open it as read-only:

From the “Manage saved sessions” menu option, you can open or delete saved sessions:
