More and more professors are banning laptops from their classrooms. This is coming at a time when more and more colleges are also requiring students to buy laptop computers.
The problem is that students are checking their emails, Facebook, or other websites during class instead of listening to the lectures.
But beyond that, some professors don’t like the fact that laptop users are just producing word-for-word transcripts of lectures as opposed to listening, understanding, analyzing, and summarizing. Interesting, most students surveyed after a laptop ban agree that their participation in class increased.
In fact one chem professor went to the extent of freezing a laptop in liquid nitrogen and shattering it dropping it on the floor to demonstrate his no-laptop policy:
Some schools are are dealing with the problem by allowing professors to turn off wireless Internet access on a per-classroom basis. (Is the range of Wifi so low that it only extends to a single classroom?) Others, like Villanova, are turning off wireless Internet in classrooms from 8-5.
On the other hand, some students say that they’re the customers in the whole situation since they’re paying the tuition, and they should be able to do whatever they like.
On the subject of tuition, the Above the Law blog thinks people think that if a professor can’t be bothered to be more interesting than a blog or some random website, what’s the point of the hundreds of thousands of dollars in tuition the students are paying?

This is a big problem as most of the students are diverting their attention from studies to other things such as facebook, emails or other websites.. i think there should be a system where a student cant access particular sites on their browser..however, it should not be banned completely..

Our school has a WIFI zone. I myself brought laptop to do my research while I am in school. I don’t think there I have seen wrong unless students are not doing their school projects. Laptops are really a great help for students. And it would be up to them how they can use it for their own benefit. Its just about self discipline.
I can see the argument about students being distracted but I think word for word copies of lectures is possible with pen and paper. Maybe there is an argument for a small device which just lets students take notes although I’m not sure what the benefit of that would be over a pen and paper!

It can get quite distracting for students sitting in the back of a lecture hall to follow an instructor in the front while in view of laptops screens with games, facebook and other online social activities. I can see how a laptops can be useful in class but only if their use is directly related to the lesson at hand.

I guess, the problem in this situation is not the bringing of laptop at all, it is the preferrence of students to attend to the class and give focus to the class discussions, leaving behind their personal businesses behind.
I just hope those people who are not bothered whether they are distracting or not, should give consideration to those being affected by their actions. And with respect to Olive’s response, I guess you gave a brilliant idea. Why not just pursue schooling through online schools. There have been many accredited schools and universities that are offering online degrees and these degrees are being recognized by employers.

Being a student in graduate school, I think bringing of laptop is necessary so that students will no longer copy their lectures on to their computer whenever they got home. What is irrelevant is the discipline of some students who prefer to loiter online while in class.

NO! they shouldn’t and they have no right to do so. My laptop has helped me with my exams, homeworks, you name it and it has brought me to where I am today. Instead of blending in to the library, I do my research all alone and complete my work in a shorter time.

I think laptops are key to an education and can help. Its just about educating students to use them in the correct way.
Laptops are so helpful to people that I think its more about educating students how and when to use them so that they can take those principles on with them when they leave college and so know how to use their time most efficiently in the workplace or if they are self employed and their time is their own.
