gEdit is the main text editor for the default desktop environment in Ubuntu and other Linuxes using GNOME. It’s also available on Windows and Mac. It can open multiple files in tabs in a single window. I often have tens of files open when working on a project. It’s a pain to have to open every single file again when switching projects.
Granted, there’s a “Recent Documents” part of the File menu that shows the most recently opened files, but it’s limited to five files. And usually you have different files for different projects.
There’s a plugin for gEdit which save which files you’re working on in a session. The Session Saver plugin is part of the gedit-plugins package for Ubuntu. You can install it with the Synaptic, the Package Manager, or type the following in the terminal:
sudo apt-get install gedit-plugins
Be sure the “universe” repository is enabled, because that’s where gedit-plugins lives.
Note: plugins aren’t currently as easy to make work in Windows yet.
Here’s a run-through of how the Session Saver plugin works.
After the plugin is installed, you need to activate it. Choose Preferences from the Edit menu:
In the Preferences window, choose the Plugins tab. Then select the checkbox next to “Session Saver” to activate it, and click Close:
One the plugin is active, a “Saved sessions” option gets added to the File menu. To save a session, open the files you want to work with for a given project, arrange the tabs, and choose “Save current session”:
Gedit pops up a dialog asking for the name of the session. The plugin doesn’t currently support renaming, so choose wisely:
When you save a session, the saved sessions are added as the first thing on the sessions menu. Just select one to open up that session:
gEdit starts opening all the files for that session:
If you select a session while there are open files in the gedit window, the new session will be opened in a new gedit window. If there’s just a blank, new file in a the Gedit window, the session will be opened in the same window.
Note: Normally Gedit opens files in new tabs. To create a new window, you can drag a tab out of Gedit, or choose “Move to New Window” in the Documents menu.
If, when you open a session, one of the files in the session were already open in another gedit window, gedit will ask you if you want to also edit the file in the new window, or open it as read-only. Select “Don’t Edit” to open it as read-only:
