If you’ve ever bought a Sony consumer electronic product, you know it takes a special kind of memory chip called Memory Stick which only works for Sony products.

Every other manufacturer (Canon, Nikon, Samsumg, Nokia, etc.) use memory chips which are compatible across a wide range of companies’ products: MMC, SD, miniSD, microSD.

But Sony, continuing its usual practice of banking on the Sony name to lure customers in, and then trying to keep them ensnared with proprietary tech, uses its own Memory Stick chips. Now, however, they’ve seen the light, according to the New York Times Bits Blog.

Sony announced that it would be offering SD and SDHD compatibility in many of its camcorders and digital cameras. The president of Sony US said, “It’s all about providing consumers with choice.”

OK, yeah, right. More like being dragged, kicking and screaming and crying, to market reality:
