Slashdot has a story on the fifth anniversary of the CAN-SPAM act.
The referenced article says that
- CAN-SPAM did help to establish minimum standards for legitimate businesses, and also encouraged most to go beyond the minimum and ask for permission before sending solicitous e-mail.
- But it didn’t, and can’t, stop truly illicit e-mails from non-legitimate sources.
Interestingly, it states that most spam e-mail is coming from organized crime these days. It seems that mob groups that used to run protection rackets have found that there’s more advantage to be had in online scams.
