The hardware firewall will also protect you in the fleeting amount of time between your computer starting up, and the firewall starting. It's a lot easier to press the reset button on the router/firewall than to re-install your OS.

In terms of firewalls, it can’t go wrong for a hardware firewall, which I have always used. I have crashed a couple of times on my Mac, which is highly surprising, but most of the time it was due to Microsoft Office Software. Thanks for the comments and the citation!
