I noticed today that VLC’s icon has a Santa hat. That was surprising, since I haven’t updated the current version of VLC since I installed it.

Actually, I think it’s an Easter egg, as people are discovering on Randy Jensen’s blog, Gear Diary, and Help for Linux. It’s happening on Windows, too, according to the NeoWin forum.

Interestingly, on Ubuntu, the icon:

  • appears in the Alt-Tab icon list
  • appears in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen
  • doesn’t appear in the top panel
  • doesn’t appear in the window menu for VLC player. (This last one is just because Ubuntu’s Gnome theme doesn’t put the program icons in the window menu corner).

Hey thanks for the mention. Notice my post is a bit old. ;-) This was in the release last year. Glad it still works!

    Hello, Joel

    Welcome to Digitivity.

I guess I just noticed it this year because I’m using the latest release on Ubuntu.

Before that, I was using 0.86 on Windows, which I consider a classic.
