Version 0.47 of the open-source vector drawing program, Inkscape, has been released.

If you’re not already familiar with Inkscape, it’s comparable to Corel Draw, Xara, or Adobe Illustrator. It has fewer features than some of those programs, but also a few that they don’t. Bitmap-based drawing programs save a line as a collection of square pixels. If you increase its size, it won’t look smooth. Vector drawing programs save a line as a line. You can increase a drawing’s size by a thousand percent or more and still have a smooth, anti-aliased drawing.

Version 0.47 of Inkscape brings the following, according to the release notes:

• Timed autosave: no more lost work

• Spiro splines: an exciting new way to work with paths, fully supported in Pen, Pencil, and Node tools

• Auto smooth nodes: a new type of node that keeps the path as smooth as possible as you move it or its neighbors

• New modes in Tweak tool: pushing and jittering whole objects, scaling/rotating objects, deleting and duplicating using the “soft brush”

• Reworked, much more usable snapping system and a Snapping toolbar

• New path effects, including sketch, hatching, envelope deformation; effects can be stacked and assigned to groups

• A huge collection of preset filters in the new Filters menu

• New cairo-based PS and EPS export: improved quality, more features supported, fallback rasterization for filters and transparency

• Spell checker for text objects in a document

• Many new extensions: restacking, calendar, printing marks, cartesian and polar grids, interpolating attributes

• Optimized SVG code options, now with their own Preferences page

• Many other improvements, usability tweaks, memleak stops, and misc bugfixes

Note: Currently, version 0.47pre4 is available on the Ubuntu repositories. On Ubuntu, some of the import and export features are provided using the packages dia, libwmf-bin, pstoedit, skencil, imagemagick, and perlmagick. Other extensions use ruby, libxml-xql-perl, python-numpy, and python-lxml. You must have these packages to make full use of all extensions and effects.
