Jonathon Schwartz, CEO of Sun Microsystems, blogs that Sun is planning to launch a store for Java applications on the lines of Apple’s iPhone app store. Well, he doesn’t mention the iPhone store, but that’s what everybody thinks of in comparison. Since Apple’s iPhone sales only number in the millions (21 million), while just the developers for Java number in the millions.

It’s great that Sun is finally getting around to unlocking the potential of Java, which has an installed based of 1 billion computers. The primary advantage of Java applications, as I see it, is their ability to run on just about any platform or operating system, regardless of version (Macintosh, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Vista).

The applications will apparently be able to use both Java and JavaFX. But nothing is too clear or set in stone as Sun will be soliciting comment at the next JavaOne conference.

The story is being discussed on Slashdot here, as well as on various blogs.
